I won’t bore people here with a rehash of my EAR/ONS Stalking MO Analysis since it can be accessed easily enough on the Q Files. Rather I call attention to that haunting fact: No one (and this extends to the official level) can place any person of interest at all the locations where EAR struck victims.
By this I mean, no records indicate that any POI lived in or near the strike locations during the period in which EAR was active. Searches are made for residence addresses. Drivers’ licenses are check to see if there was a stop that might put him passing through a jurisdiction.
Forty years later this is about it. Yet it seems that even 40 years ago there was little more law enforcement could do. They could ask family and business associates where the POI had been. But, obviously, they never had the right POI to back check.
We are left only with pattern. Many have sought and been beguiled by interpreting the pattern of EAR’s movements. Do his strike points favor my auto-wrecker theory, the construction theory, towing, what?
It is impossible to get tangible with a ghost. And that’s what we are tracking. We are tracking an imprint of locations. The carnage left behind him is not a clue. That is confined to the room and house where he struck. We know the topographic features he used. But what allowed him to roam the state, in the pattern that he did?
CATS lead the way from the highway to the Ventura strike. It is the only strike off Highway 101 and 5 in So. Cal. It’s off the Santa Paula Freeway (126).
One thing I have written repeatedly is that the pattern does not indicate EAR/ONS lived in any of these locations except where he began. He knew the East Area of Sacramento. But when he branched out, the repeating them is highways and sticking close thereto. And these were Highway 101 and Highway 5. Not the 10 to Pasadena, not 405, not 15.
When he branched out to So. Cal he strikes between long gaps. Sometimes it is 2 or 3 months. Sometimes even 6 months. Then finally 5 years. During his strikes in Contra Costa County he had pulled back as well. Strikes 38-48 are contained within the autumn of 1978 to the summer (July) of 1979. In the beginning, at one point, in the East Area EAR had struck 5 times in a month. It seems that he was getting further from his base of operations.
The pattern shows after he was missing the summer of 1977 he returned and was able to free himself of the East Area of Sacramento. He struck in Stockton and then returned to Sacramento, then he was able to branch out in 1978 and hit Modesto, Stockton again, and Davis. He was able to travel. And in doing so, he was able to reconnoiter more. He laboriously reconnoitered.
This, the pattern that emerged now 40 years ago, is the key. In September 1977 EAR/ONS had some crucial change in his life and job allowing him to be free to travel. This remained unchanged. He became bolder and traveled further as the years progressed.
This is the only imprint we have. Other than that we have a ghost traveler. He expanded his reach over time, but the pattern does not indicate he ever knew the communities very well. How could he essentially remain in Sacramento and travel about the state?
